It seems as if this leg of the trip was a year ago, and the memory is a bit blurry. Old age? Alcohol? Covid? No matter where the blame lies, here goes the quick trip from Cody to Reno:

Stop number one: Lander, WY which turned out to be a much nicer town than expected. The ‘bigger town’ on the map is Riverton, however, Lander is classier. While there F&O hit up the farmers’ market, and then did a ‘short’ hike in the Shoshone National Forest. This was a fabulous hike, but it turns out the rangers and all-trails fib a bit about the length of the Popo Agie Falls trail. Just go ahead and tack on an extra mile… all uphill. The not-3-but-really-4 mile trek was worth every step.

See that hill on the left, with the boulders? The hike took us around the other side of it. Most of the hike was along this river. All uphill.
On the other side of the hill (mountain) was a bench, where F&O had lunch. Sorry, you can’t see the falls in this pix. The Chronicle’s photographer was slacking.

While staying in Lander, the crew also took a field trip to see Sacajawea’s gravesite, located on the Wind River (Shoshone Tribe) reservation. The grave marker is pretty cool, but frankly the rest of the cemetery is the real sight to behold. The variety of decorations, sites, markers, and colors are diverse, and a mix of new and very old burials.

This is an older section of the Wind River/Shoshone cemetery. You can feel the ghosts.

Next stop was Green River, WY. Ollie’s handler spent time as a juvenile residing in this area, and a re-visit was essential this trip. A drive through Superior, WY brought F&O to his old homestead – located on a dirt road with a few run-down mobile homes and sheds. After stopping the carriage in the road to scope out exactly which piece of property was the right one, Flynn and Ollie were confronted by a homeowner, wanting to know what they were doing scoping out the places. Of course, that turned into a yak-fest between Ollie and the owner, who had lived there for nigh on 30 years. Interesting fellah.

Flynn and Ollie decided to take the long way back road to their RV spot in Green River. They didn’t make it. Turns out the road just sort of ended, but not before taking them 10 miles to the top of the world in south-western WY. Spectacular.

Way, way up there. Sketchy road, worth the views. Hint: take a quad.

Two other sights were on the agenda during their stay in Green River (not including that farmer’s market as well): Fort Bridger (cannon possession is questionable) and Point of Rocks Stage Stop. Sheesh, Flynn and Ollie sure get a lot of history lessons on their travels!

So inclined? Zoom and read the sign. This is a punishment horse at Ft Bridger. Weird.
Couldn’t find a cannon at Ft Bridger. However, here is a wagon. Close enough…

Filled with history, it was time to move west. The final stop prior to Reno, NV was a quick overnight in Wells, NV. Yeah, no pictures of Wells because there is nothing IN Wells. To make up for that, here is a photo taken along the way to Wells. In Utah, duh!

If you don’t think this is pretty cool, then you are not.

Finally, Reno. A home away from home. Land of fewer cannons and wagons; a place with more civilization, good food, two farmers’ markets, and of course, poker!

Except… Stay tuned for the next episode.
